Private Tuition in Physics, Science and Maths

Please note that for the academic year 2022-23 I will only be available on Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays due to my publishing commitments.

I offer private tuition in Physics (to A-Level), Science (GCSE and KS3) and Maths (to GCSE, A-level Mechanics only).  I’m also experienced in preparing pupils for the Maths and Science components of Common Entrance at 11+ and 13+.  I have a wealth of experience in working face to face and online, with small groups and one-to-one, gained through and alongside fifteen years of classroom practice and twelve years of working as a tutor.

Pupils I have tutored in the past have exceeded their predicted scores significantly - I’ve helped some of my past tutees turn a predicted grade E in AS Physics into a C, and a predicted grade B in GCSE Maths into an A*. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of helping individual students achieve the very best that they can, regardless of their starting point.

I tailor my tutoring approach to the individual; some pupils achieve their best with tutoring sessions that follow and reinforce their classroom learning, others with time spent working through past paper exam questions, and others still with extension sessions that take them beyond what they have met in the classroom to test and develop their knowledge and understanding. I take the time to get to know tutees, to evaluate their learning style, preferences and needs, and structure our sessions accordingly.

I can host tuition sessions at my home; I am based in Sandford-on-Thames, a few minutes outside of Oxford. Parking is plentiful, and parents are welcome to relax in my living room (alongside my study) while we work; there’s also a good pub almost next door if you prefer to leave us to it. I can also host a small number of sessions at The Gallery, 54 Marston Street.

If that’s not possible, I am prepared to tutor in the student’s own home, and will travel within Oxford and to the surrounding area. I also tutor online, using Zoom, and have a two camera setup so students can read my written notes in real time.

I charge £65 per hour for tuition. There is a small charge if I have to travel to your home (charged per session, not per hour):
OX4 postcodes; villages very near Sandford (eg Nuneham Courtney) - £5 per session
OX1/2/3 within the ring road; areas immediately beyond it (eg Cutteslowe) - £10
OX1/2/3 outside the ring road; northern parts of OX13, OX14, OX44 (eg Abingdon, Garsington) - £15
I will consider longer journeys at a rate to be negotiated.

I will invoice via email one month in arrears - there is no need to have cash ready for me at the start of every session. Regretfully I have been forced to introduce cancellation charges: I understand that sometimes tutorial times need to be changed and I will not charge if a minimum 48 hours notice is given, but for any less than that I will charge for the full session.

I’m very happy to tutor in small group sessions; I have found it can be very productive to have two or more tutees working together as their collaboration makes for a better and more varied learning experience. I charge £40 per hour each for two pupils; £32 per hour each for three; £28 per hour each for four; £25 per hour each for five; £22 per hour each for more than five. Ideally such sesions will be at your home or at The Gallery - it’s difficult for me to host too many pupils at my home and it doesn’t work terribly well over Zoom.

I am very happy to advise on coursework, and can provide a detailed reading of the mark scheme, as this is simply backing up what the teacher will have taught in class - but I can’t help with completing the final piece of work.
